First Year Interns: Class of 2018
Kimberly Biichle, MD
"Kimbo slice" was born in Redland, Florida. She went to school at Florida State University where she studied biology and chemistry. She then went to Medical School at the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. Kim loves to garden, fish and other assorted outdoor activities. She has a black belt in Kenpo Karate, so don't mess with her!
Hilary Frank, DO
Hilary started out life in South Korea as a twin but moved to Minnesota where she grew up in her adopted home. She did her undergraduate at Seattle Pacific University obtaining a degree in Biology. She got her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences. When not working as a resident, she likes to run (so she can eat more). She has the honor of being the shortest resident in the program. She loves to shop and travel, and is thrilled to blow her newly obtained paycheck!
Sheiva Jahanban, MD
Sheiva was born and raised in the Windy City (Chicago). She went to Lake Forest College where she got a degree in sociology and anthropology. She subsequently went to Rosalind Franklin University where she obtained a masters in biomedical science. She got her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. When not working as a resident, she likes lots of girly things like cooking, photography and painting her nails. She also loves hair styling and makeup. She is excessively organized, which should serve her well as a resident.
Anna Kalbfell, MD
Anna was born on a farm in rural Indiana (actually in the nearby hospital, not in a manger). She went to Purdue, and she is a passionate Boilermaker! She got a degree in neurobiology and physiology (excessive nerd). She went to medical school at Indiana University (she was very conflicted). For fun, she likes to garden and drink gluten free beer (usually at the same time). She loves swimming and has 14 cats (no kids).
Sasha Mikhael, MD
Sasha was born in Toronto (that's in Canada). She stayed at home and went to school at University of Toronto where she played on the varsity water polo team and got a degree in human biology and french literature. Sasha speaks 3 languages (Canadian, Arabic and French). She went to medical school at Saba University in the Caribbean. She absolutely loves rap music but hates carbs. She spends an excessive amount of time reading food labels and exercising. She likes swimming, snowboarding and water sports.
Second Year Residents: Class of 2017
Cortney Casper, MD
Cortney was born in Mexico and raised in southeastern Idaho. He got a BS in Computer Science at Stevens-Henager College in Salt Lake City, Utah. After graduation, he attended medical school at American University of Caribbean where he got his MD. When not working as a resident, he enjoys spending time with his 5 daughters, son and wife (who can really cook). He is a runner and enjoys all outdoor activities.
Farina Islam, MD
Farina was born in Bangladesh and raised as a southern belle in Georgia. She subsequently received a BS in Biology from Kennasaw State University in Georgia. She attended Medical School at Ross University School of Medicine where she obtained her MD degree. When not working as a resident, she loves to eat (especially international food) & travel. She enjoys all outdoor activities.
Maria Lagopoulos, MD
Maria was born in Toronto, but spent her childhood on the beach in Barbados. She then moved to Old Jersey (Channel Islands in the UK) for 5 years following which she finished high school back in Toronto. She got a BHSc in Health Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. She then attended Medical School at St. George's University School of Medicine where she obtained her MD. When not working as a resident, she enjoys travel. She likes dancing, yoga, running and cooking. She does not want anyone to know, but she enjoys cleaning.
Kyla Rae, MD
Kyla was born and raised in Swift Current, Canada. This is just south of Moose Jaw. She then got her degree in Physiology from the University of Saskatchewan. She attended Medical School in Saba University Medical School where she obtained her MD. When not working as a resident, she enjoys all fitness activities. She also enjoys cooking. She enjoys music and plays multiple instruments. For a few years, she was a wedding singer. She is currently engaged. If she drinks enough, she will probably sing at her own wedding.
Christanna Schuman, MD
Christanna was raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended Centre College, where she obtained a BA in Art History. She subsequently went to Medical School at the University of Louisville where she obtained her MD. When not working as a resident, she is an exercise nut doing crossfit. She really likes gardening, likely a result of her experience working a dairy farm in Osceola, Wisconsin. She loves backpacking, and spent the summer before starting at Providence hiking the Kalalau Trail in Hawaii.
Third Year Residents: Class of 2016
Jennifer Borson, MD
Jenna grew up in Michigan getting a BS in Brain Behavior and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Michigan. She subsequently went to Wayne State University where she received her MD degree. When not working, she likes to do yoga and jazzercise. She enjoys traveling and hiked Machu Picchu (Peru) just prior to starting residency.
Ashley Gardner, MD
Ashley grew up on the West side of Michigan and did her undergraduate education at Albion College getting a BA in Biology. She subsequently attended the American University of the Caribbean for Medical School where she got her MD. When at home she enjoys tennis, golf and trashy television shows. She loves to "get down on the dance floor".
Candice Geist, DO
Candice grew up in Phoenix. She subsequently attended University of Northern Colorado on a Swimming Scholarship (100 fly, 50 & 100 free) where she got a BS in Biology and BA in Political Science. She then went to Medical School at RVUCOM where she got her DO. When not working, she is also obsessed with her husband and 2 dogs. She enjoys working out (swimming and running) and likes to do triathlons.
Alison Sullivan, DO
Alison grew up in New Orleans and did her undergraduate education at University of Louisiana at Monroe getting a BS in Biology. She subsequently went to medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where she obtained her DO. In her free time she likes to run, cycle and is partially obsessed with her dogs. She enjoys reading and organizing (which should serve her well during residency). She moved to Michigan for her husband, an internal medicine resident. She is currently knocked up, so she cannot eat her favorite (chicken noodle soup with hot sauce).
Urva Naik, MD
Urva grew up in Canada, doing her undergraduate education at University of Waterloo obtaining a degree in Biomedical Sciences. She subsequently went to St. George's University for Medical School obtaining her MD degree. When not working, she enjoys movies, professional hockey (Toronto Maple Leafs fan), reading and she is going to learn how to cook. She loves to travel and plans to get to 40 countries before she gets to 40 years old (currently 29 and counting). As her residency has progressed, she has gotten louder and louder. She actually TP'd the PD's Office.
Fourth Year Residents: Class of 2015
Clinic Chief: Derick Fenton, MD
Derick did his undergraduate education at University of Wyoming where he received a BS degree. He subsequently attended the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine for his medical education. When not working as a resident, he spends time with his 5 children and wonderful wife. He also takes time to play on a club soccer team and some football, basketball or Mountain Biking on the weekends. He enjoys attending Tigers and Wolverines games.
Administrative Chief: Geoffrey Gordon, MD
Geoffrey did his undergraduate education at Oakland University obtaining a BS in Biology. He subsequently did his medical education at Wayne State University School of Medicine. When not working as a resident, he is a fan of all Detroit sports temas and especialy loves baseball. He enjoys golfing and spending time with his family. He and his lovely wife Rachel have two beautiful sons. Bradley was delivered at Providence Hospital the day before residency began and Sammy 2 years later. They also have 3 cats.
Scheduling Chief: Sabiya Raja, MD
Sabiya was born in Zimbabwe, Africa. She moved to America and did her undergraduate education at University of California, Davis obtaining a degree in English and Biological Sciences. She subsequently did her medical education at St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. When not working as a resident, Sabiya likes baking, Pilates, chocolate making and tennis. She does a great "Bobble Head"! She wants it known that she is, in fact, married.
Aliese Smith, MD
Aliese attended Ross University in Dominica for her Medical Education. When not working as a resident, she enjoys traveling and has been all over Europe, to China and several islands in the Caribbean. Her favorite city is Florence, Italy. Aliese is new to Michigan and is currently working on making her new place feel like home.
